Quick quotes quill....our own Harry Potter Adventure

Life has been quite the adventure lately....Seth had his first interview. When he got back home I asked him how it went and he said that he felt just like Harry potter and he was being interviewed by Rita Skeeter with her quick quotes quill

. It is kind of funny to see your life's adventures through the eyes of the quick quotes quill. We are pretty excited for this new adventure. I took Marisa when he was sworn in she thought it was all really fascinating. Who knows what new adventures this new job will bring but kind of fun to be having our own Harry Potter adventure. Below is the articles that just came out enjoy!!

“The next five or six months will be very interesting.” he said with a smile, “There will be a pretty intensive learning curve ahead.”

Oveson was sitting in his office in the Reeves building at USU-Eastern trying to get things wrapped up before his swearing in on Wednesday during the County Commission meeting. He has only been an Internal Auditor for USU since December.

Before that he worked with Smuin, Rich & Marsing for three years. His tasks included being part of the independent audits for Carbon County. He also traveled extensively to be part of the audit team in the Uintah Basin, San Juan and many other areas that SM &J had contracts. That job has given him the experience and confidence to take on the Clerk/Auditor role. He is glad to step away from all the traveling to spend more time with his young family.

He was approached about the Clerk/Auditor position right after it was known Pero was leaving. He was hesitant at first, but after several more individuals discussed the position with him he gave it some serious consideration. His wife was a little nervous about him taking a job he would have to run for re-election to keep, but they decided it was worth the risk.

Oveson is most comfortable in the accounting end of the job. He has a Masters degree from SUU and also spent two years in Denver with the national accounting firm of Mayer, Hoffman and McCann.

He is happy to finish Pero’s existing term; election is part of the new job he is least familiar with. Fortunately he will have time to gain experience before being faced with the next big election.

He and his family are glad to be back in Price and look forward to many more years. He plans to seek re-election and hopes to still be meeting the needs of the public after 20 or 30 years when he is ready to retire.

He grew up in the Cleveland area and his wife is from Price, so when their oldest daughter was ready for school, they made the decision to move back to a small town area.

Oveson laughed about small towns and the way people fit each other into comfortable connections. He says when they ask about his wife, Melanie, and he says she is Coach Garvin's oldest daughter, they nod their heads and smile. The family has three children, Marisa (8), Skyler (3) and Mersadie (7 mo).

The small town feel is what drew the family back to the area, but it is the potential for the County to grow and thrive that really excites him as he looks forward to the job. With the potential of some new industry and changes ahead, he feels it’s going to be an exciting time to be part of the county.

While Pero is limited in only holding one position and had to resign before being appointed to the tax commission, Oveson was able to extend a two week notice to USU. He will take on his new job while buttoning up the loose ends of the old one. He will also work as closely with his replacement as possible while taking on the new responsibilities of the Clerk/Auditor role. He hopes to wind most of his college duties up by March 1st.

"My first day on the job I hope to open all the bids without tripping up too much,"said Oveson with a smile.

The newly appointed clerk comes from Smuin,Rich & Marsing accounting firm to fill the position of Robert Pero.

Oveson will finish Pero's term and hopes to keep the position in the next election year.

"We are excited to have you. I think there's great things in your future," said Commissioner John Jones.

Man that is a handsome one!!!!

Adventurous Day

  

We took the youth ice-skating the night Seth went in to give his speech to the central democratic committee...it was really fun but all I could think about is how he was doing and if things were going well .  The couple weeks before all of this happened was pretty crazy Seth started recieving phone calls from various people telling him that he should do this and how good he would be for the position.   After the first phone call we were not on board.   Seth was really enjoying his job at the college and did not see the need to change.   But then he got more and more phone calls and we decided that it was time to really think and pray about this.  What is funny is that we came to the conclusion that it was right and what we should at least try for.  So he let all of those people know that he was going to do it.   After that is was as though things just started falling into place things that we did not think of we're brought to our attention.   Someone suggested that we send out a letter to the committee.  Others were calling on behalf of him. He wrote a speech but he just did not like it or the way that it flowed....it just did not feel right it was a good one but when you get those feelings you know that it is just not right. So Seth took it to the higher Athority (prayer always helps) and it was amazing he took out a paper and things just began to flow.  All the while during all of this we felt calm.   Despite the fact that he just got a great stable job and this one he will have to run for office in two years.   It just all felt right.  So I got all of his stuff ready to go and I headed off to mutual.   Yes I could not go and watch I was way to nervous to be able to watch besides I had to go to mutual which was earlier so I was not able to wish him luck before he left.  So after mutual we got back and waited for Seth to get home.   This was his speech that he gave with a few changes that he said The Lord helped him with.

Tonight I want to share with you two things – the first is why I would like to be the Clerk/Auditor and they second is why I am qualified.

 

We are all here tonight to find out how great all the applicants are. I thought I would show you all on of the greatest things about me (show photo – My wife Melanie, my daughters Marisa and Mersadie and my son Skyler – who is three). Explaining anything to a 3 year old is always a difficult task so when I was asked "Daddy why do you want to change jobs". I had to think hard before answering.

 

            When it comes down to it as an Accountant you don't leave many permanent things behind you. -- people seem to only care about a tax return until they receive the refund and most governmental entities only care about their audit because it’s required it to be filed with the state. As the clerk auditor I will be about to use the knowledge and expertise I have been acquiring for years to make our county stronger and better.  

 

The first time I considered this position was several months ago when walking through the cemetery (obviously it was a lot warmer than it has been the last few days) I saw a headstone that read "Mr. Democrat" It caught my attention. It was the headstone of Brig Young who served as the County Clerk for a long time, long enough that it was even put on his headstone and I decided that I wanted to leave a legacy like that – something permanent, like a well ran organization that I could be proud of..

 

     As far as qualifications- I think you all have copies of my resume if not I have more here. I am a Certified Public Accountant with 5 years of public accounting experience. I have worked with large publically traded companies and small start-ups providing Auditing, Tax and Consulting services. I have audited most of the local cities and towns such as: Price, Welington, East Carbon, Sunnyside, districts like PRWID and the Carbon School District and Uintah, Dagget, Grand, ........and most importantly Carbon County. I have seen their strengths and weaknesses I know what it takes to run them effectively.  

 

I could explain about the complexities of Governmental Accounting or how to do a GASB34 conversion. I could explain the new compliance requirements for our landfill or how to look for and correct potential errors in the counties books caused by software updates. I could go on and tell you how internal controls should be assessed, or explain compliance requirements for property taxes or talk about the Board of Equalization. - But if you are anything like my wife you would find it incredibly boring. (I might even catch some of you doseing)

 

And in reality all comes back to this (show photo). Not just my family but all the great families that live in here - and the question is - who we are going to appoint to safeguard the public funds that these families have entrusted to the County. As the Democratic Party it is OUR responsibility to nominate the best possible candidate for this position and I believe I am that candidate.

Seth got home and when he walked in he really tried to hide things on his face and really tried to make me think that he had not gotten it.   But he said that things/his speech went really well and felt very blessed that he had gotten so much help.  It was one of those moments that felt like you were sleep walking.   Like what is happening is not real.   No worries we celebrated Oveson style.  We built a fire and roasted marshmellows.   It was a really great night.
